Chapter 12

Jessica

I couldn’t believe that Cory overheard me talking to River. Having my private phone calls monitored really upset me, more so than I let on when he apologized. Cory was a nice kid and all, but Royal was right about him causing trouble wherever he went. My heart had opened and I’d manage to relax a little, but now it had snapped closed and I was back in survival mode.

I’d kept my anger and anxiety under control and put on a happy face, but knowing that someone else knew my deepest, darkest secret tipped my anxiety into mild panic. Who knew how long it was going to take Cory to break his promise. The teen had a serious impulse control problem, so I was pretty sure he was going to blurt it out at the worst time.

Still, I put one foot in front of the other and tagged along for the shopping. Royal kept trying to buy me things, but I said no. Maybe he got the message that I was still annoyed with his young friend because at some point they had a private conversation and Cory jumped on his bike and rode away.

I was able to relax just a little when Royal came back and put his arm around me. “Want to go for a ride?”

I perked up. “Riding with you is one of my favorite things to do.”

“Good. I think you’re going to like my favorite scenic overlook.”

We never made it to the scenic overlook because my phone began chirping incessantly as we were putting our helmets on. It was the tone I chose for Josie.

I answered it quickly and walked off to speak in private. I saw Royal waiting patiently near his bike. Rather than Josie, it was Evan on the line.

He jumped into a conversation the minute the call connected. “We can’t do this anymore, Jessica. I’m sorry, but you’re going to have to call the guy who helped you the last time. You’ve got to come and get River right now. Dammit, are you listening to me?”

“I hear you,” I hissed. “And of course, I’ll come to get him. But you need to tell me what’s going on. Why are you freaking out?”

“It’s Josie. She passed out at work. I don’t know how it happened, but her cancer is back.”

“What are you talking about? My cousin never had cancer.”

His voice sounded miserable. “She did. It’s why we moved here. There is a cancer center that specializes in the kind of brain cancer she has. She had the tumor irradiated and made a full recovery. She got the best treatment, but now it’s back.”

Josie had brain cancer? My hands were shaking and my knees started to give out on me.

In an instant, Royal was there. “What’s going on?”

Evan was still yelling about how she didn’t have much time left and I needed to come right away. I cut him off gently. “I’ll catch the next flight out and rent a car at the airport. I’ll be there as soon as possible.
